Right Edge Art studio classes provide the calm, inspirational and relaxed space artists need to create. Online and studio students are encouraged to create a similar space for themselves at home.

Students progress at their own pace with no unnecessary pressure to perform or compete, which allows beginners to overcome their fear of failure and help them to build confidence in their creative abilities.

All students start at the beginning. No advanced classes in any of the other art media are provided to students who haven’t done the realistic drawing classes first.

Once the student mastered the basic techniques of realistic drawing and painting, the student may stay on for advanced classes in the realistic style and some other styles.

What is realism in art and why is it important?

Realistic art is the accurate, detailed, honest, unembellished drawing or painting of the subject matter or reference.

Famous realist artists include Gustave Courbet, Jean-François Millet, Rosa Bonheur, and South African Gerard Sekoto and John Meyer.

The key elements of realistic art is:

Precision – accurate drawing of proportion and perspective from close observation.
Values – accurate shading to define three-dimensionality and create the illusion of depth.
Contrast – contrast between lightest and darkest values.
Edges – sharp, soft or lost.
Transitions – seamless and gradual change in values, colours, texture, edges, and colours.
Colours – warm and cool colours and saturation of colours.

The importance of mastering realism in art first is that it is a building block from where artists can launch themselves into an infinite number of artistic styles. When you understand how to truthfully copy what is in front of you in a way that expresses the reality of those objects, you can begin to bend and shift the realities into something more impressionistic, expressionistic, decorative or abstract.

The pinnacle of realism in art is super realism or photorealism. Famous super realist artists, include Chuck Close, Richard Estes, Audrey Flack, and South African Liesel Wessels and Jono Dry.
